Today is Taiwan's 28th February Peace Memorial Day, a day that reminds people here of the preciousness of peace and democracy and opportunity to reflect on the lessons of the past. Throughout history, we have seen many societies suffer unspeakable collective pain in the pursuit of and peace, truth and justice. In the UK, we mark Remembrance Day on every 11th November with the phrase ‘Lest we forget’, calling on people not to forget the sacrifices of those who came before us; in Taiwan, many people use the Taiwanese phrase ‘m̄-thang buē-kì’ (“never forget”) to make a similar appeal to remember, but reconcile. In an ever-changing world, commemorating our past is crucial for preserving our civic identity, and valuing our free society.
